@whisky_cellar chose a @TweetTastings to launch some of their new 7th series Private Cellars Selection and Pintail bottlings.
Appearance: pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line in the glass, take an age to bead up and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: huge orchard fruit notes: apples, pears, dry apricot and plums. There is a sweetness suggesting sweet shop jars, icing sugar and a little honey. A little nutty milk chocolate, lemon zest and some vanilla round things off.
Palate: Sweet oil arrival, mouthcoating! There's loads of honey sweetness & a huge bite of gingery spice. The fruit has turned all tropical: pineapple, mango, banana. There's a lot of citrus here too: sharp lemon and lime juice, sour grapefruit. A few more sips offer dry icing sugar, cinnamon and some vanilla ice cream. The ABV is perfectly concealed not really biting until the last minute. Yummy!
Finish: Lingering ginger spice, tropical fruit and dry icing sugar. Great dram to open the evening with!
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line and immediately form small beads which fall as fast thin oily legs.
Nose: dunnage funk and hedgerow berries. Werther Originals buttery toffee and brown sugar suggest a load of sweetness to come. The spice is a little gentler on this one: nutmeg and a little pepper. There's an odd Red Leicester note here too!
Palate: surprisingly thin arrival, huge sweetness & a gentle spice. Hedgerow berry jam to the fore here: raspberries, strawberries, blackberries. Runny syrup and icing sugar. There's a bit of wood influence on this one - drying oak tannins.
Finish: Red berries, peppery spice and a lovely warming afterglow.
Yummy dram!
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: the Oloroso Qtr cask has done it's work here! Bronze in the glass, swirls form a thin line which beads up slowly and fall as slow thin legs,
Nose: Christmas is a glass! Huge notes of dried fruit soaked in sherry: currants, raisins, dates, prunes. There's some balsamic vinegar and chewy toffee. A note nut suggest almonds or marzipan. Coffee grinds and dark chocolate give a bitter edge.
Palate: thick sweet arrival, surprisingly spicy! The balsamic note from the nose is huge on the palate, cuts through my mince pie butteriness! There's loads of berry and cherry notes, some dried fruit and brown sugar. The ABV is very evident on this one. Dried fruit and toffee round things off. Definitely a fireside sipper - made for Christmas.
Finish: lingering balsamic vinegar, dried fruit, drying brown sugar and ginger spice.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a hairline crack in the glass, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: loads of vanilla to start, some buttered popcorn, toffee and milk chocolate - very grain like. This is a dram to take your time over. Some tropical fruit notes: bananas, icing sugar coated dried pineapple, lemon zest and some shortbread. There's a gentle spice here too: cinnamon or nutmeg. A mustiness suggesting a second hand bookshop rounds things off. Anyone getting a little old Bowmore-esque Parma Violet note here too?
Palate: thick sweet buttery arrival - more grain characteristics! There's a lovely mouthcoating oiliness leaving gentle spice and a dryness on the tongue inviting another sip. The tropical fruit from the nose is back along with some citrus. There's almonds, milk chocolate, a huge drying note: icing sugar, desiccated coconut (thanks @PadWhisky) and some ginger spice.
Finish: long and dry with icing sugar, buttered popcorn and a gentle spice. Yummy!
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: reddy-gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line in the glass, beads up immediately but takes an age to fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: bacon frazzles, red berries, seaweed and some medicinal smoke - unusual for a Caol Ila. It's not quite dirty but it's definitely mucky! Chinese BBQ Spare Ribs spring out of the glass.
Palate: Mmmm mmmm MMMMMM mmmm MMMM mmmmm! MMM mmm? MMMMM! mmmmm! Thick sweet chewy smoky arrival, brown sugar, hedgerow berries drizzled in balsamic vinegar, over grilled bacon and a huge smack in the face of dried seaweed. There's a little citrus zest and antiseptic plasters. Very drying.
Finish: lingering smoke, salinity and hedgerow berries. Yummy!
