@edradourmalt was the first distillery I visited back in 1999 and I've had a soft spot for it every since.

Imagine my joy when my local pub put a bottle behind the bar!

Something a little special for my 1000th Review

The whisky community on Twitter is one of the friendliest I've come across but every now and again one of it's members goes that little step further. This is what happened a couple of weeks ago when @mentaldrams, who I've been swapping drams with for a couple of years now, asked if I'd like a sample of his birthday dram.

He'd decided to open a bottle of Signatory Vintage's North British 1959 51yo. How could I refuse? He included a 1989 Glenfarclas and also sent samples for @jwbassman_ so we arranged a little zoom tasting to try them!

Side by side : Independent Caol Ila

Caol Ila is Diageo's mega distillery on Islay, it's capable of producing in excess of 7 million litres of whisky a year! Some of it is bottled as a single malt, some goes into blends and some casks find their way into the hands of independent bottlers.

What I have here are 4 independent bottlings, lets see how they compare.

Good Scottish Single Grains tend to be on the older side - twenty something and you've got something rather nice, the other side of thirty and you're usually in for something special!

For this side by side I've selected 5 single grains from 4 different independent bottlers, ranging in age from 10yo to 39yo, lets see how they compare.

A Signature Journey

If you've been reading this blog for a while you may have gone back and read my first post about how I got into whisky - my first distillery visit to Edradour near Pitlochry in the Highlands. Now when I visited back in the last century it was owned by Pernod Ricard but shortly after my visit in 2002 it was bought by a local independent bottler by the name Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company.

As well as distilling Edradour and peated whisky under the name Ballechin, they buy casks from other distilleries and bottle them under the name Signatory Vintage. Over the years I've tried a few of these and always been very impressed.
