Spey Distillery @TweetTasting

@SpeySingleMalt Distillery recently held a @TweetTastings with @TheWhiskyWire

I was lucky enough to be picked - here's my thoughts and those of a few friends!

Speyside Distillery sent us each 5 drams from the current range

Trutinā @ 46%, Chairman’s Choice @ 40%, Royal Choice @ 46%, Tenné CS Batch 3 @ 57.4% & Fūmāre CS Batch 2 @ 60.4%

Let's see what they were like:

My thoughts:

Appearance: pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as as a thick line and fall as quick thick legs.

Nose: fresh cut grass, citrus peel and orchard fruit: apples, pears and apricots. A little time and air offers chopped bananas covered in vanilla custard.

Palate: thick, mouth coating arrival, sweet honey, the orchard fruit from the nose: stewed pear and apricot with a creamy vanilla custard. A peppery spice is left on the tongue as the liquid disappears. Nice.

Finish: lingering peppery spice and a little honey.

My thoughts:

Appearance: dark gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line and fall as quick thick legs.

Nose: marzipan, freshly squeezed orange juice, some orchard fruit and vanilla notes. There's peaches, pear and some dried apple.

Palate: all the key notes from the nose - nutty, sugary marzipan, orange juice, dried apple, peaches and a lovely cinnamon spice. There's honey and a drying icing sugar note leaving nutty toffee and oak on the tongue.

Finish: lingering dry oak spice and a hint of orange zest, warming.

My thoughts:

Appearance: dark gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line, slowly bead up and fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: dry hay, caramel, shortbread fingers, orchard fruit and a hint of strawberry jam. There's apricots, apples and pears along with some dried fruit hints.

Palate: smooth, sweet arrival, strawberry jam, spiced oranges and a bite of peppery spice. There's some milk chocolate, dried fruit notes, almonds and orange zest - all a little Christmasy! An oaky dryness is left as the liquid disappears.

Finish: long dry spicy ginger notes with a hint of dark chocolate.

My thoughts:

Appearance: pinky / orangey gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, take an age to bead up and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: hedgerow berries, chocolate covered cherries and a little hint of dunnage funk. The ABV is a little prickly on the nasal hair!

Palate: thick sweet arrival, a bite of ginger spice and a mouthful of cherries and berries: strawberries, raspberries, blackberries. There's some oak, gingerbread and drying icing sugar notes as the liquid disappears. Yummy!

Finish: lingering dry oak, ginger spice, red berries and sweet honey.

My thoughts:

Appearance: pale gold in the glass, swirls clings as a thin line, take an age to bead up and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: gentle peat smoke with a hint of salinity. Toffee buttons and some grassy / herbal notes. Tropical fruit notes: pineapple, banana, kiwi and some salted lemons.

Palate: Sweet, spicy arrival, honey, dry smoke and ginger spice combined with the high ABV give quite a kick. Huge lemon meringue notes, a little seaweed and some tropical fruit: dried pineapple, mango and ginger.

Finish: Long ginger spice, dry oak and lemon zest.
