Duncan Taylor @TweetTastings

Duncan Taylor @dtcwhiskies recently held a @TweetTastings with @TheWhiskyWire featuring the Black Bull range and a couple of single casks.

I was lucky enough to be picked - here's my thoughts and those of a few friends!

Let's see what they were like:

My thoughts:

Appearance: Light gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, slowly bead up and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: light bonfire smoke, distant seaweed, orchard fruit: apples, apricots and peaches. There's a herbal grassy note and some brown sugar sweetness.

Palate: thick treacle-y arrival, sea salt, smoke, marzipan and orchard fruit. Nutty sugary almond marzipan wrapped around dry apricots. There's a bite of white pepper spice left on the tongue as the liquid disappears!

Finish: lingering peppery spice, dry, horseradish (thanks Ed!) and a little brown sugar

My thoughts:

Appearancemid gold in the glass, like it's peated cousin swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: fresh rolled marzipan, herbal grassy hints, strawberry jam and a hint of smoke. There's some spiced vanilla and milk chocolate notes in here too.

Palate
again thick and treacle-y, much sweeter than the peated version, golden syrup, brown sugar, nutty almonds. There's some caramel, hedgerow berries and a lovely peppery spice.

Finish: lingering dry peppery spice with a hint of hedgerow berries. Yummy!

My thoughts:

Appearancemid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up to form an inverted crown and then fall as slow thick legs.

Nosemore marzipan - it must be a @dtcwhiskies character! This time there's no smoke or salt - buttered popcorn, vanilla and coconut. There's some tropical fruit notes too - icing sugar covered dried pineapple. There's loads of lemon here - drizzle cake, bonbons, zest, juice etc.
Yummy!

Palate:
smooth sweet arrival, a little kick of gingery spice then it's full on grain notes - vanilla, coconut, milk chocolate, pineapple and a little toffee. There's some poached apple in here with dried fruit smothered in custard. Yummy!

Finishlingering peppery spice, milk chocolate and a little tropical fruit.

My thoughts:

Appearancemid gold in the glass, swirls clings as a hairline crack, take ages to bead up and eventually fall as slow thin legs.

Noselock in at an old fashioned sweet shop! Orchard fruit, berries, icing sugar and sweet citrus - orange peel maybe? There's a little undiluted barley and fruit drink.

Palate:
STRAWBERRIES: jam, foam sweets, fresh, upside down cake - pick what you will! There's some orchard fruit notes here too - apples, pears, peaches, some brown sugar and a big kick of chilli spice as the liquid disappears. Nice!

Finish: lingering fruity boiled sweets and a ginger spice - nice!

My thoughts:

Appearancelight gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: jelly beans, baking spices, shortbread, a little sea spray and some dry oak. A little closed compared to the previous drams - maybe because the ABV has been reduced?

Palate
sweet and spicy - stewed orchard fruit with dried fruit smothered in vanilla custard. There's a drying note - oak, icing sugar and cardboard. There's a big bite of gingery spice and some citrus zest.

Finishlingering ginger spice, dry icing sugar and a little milk chocolate.
