BTC8 #BlindDrams Tasting Notes

These are my tasting notes from the Blind Tasting Consortium's 8th #BlindDrams evening.

These drams were picked by Stew @stewedwhisky

Dram 1

Appearance: Mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line and fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: cakey (Battenberg cake), cereal notes with a load of heather - Highland park but without the smoke? Tropical fruit -pineapple, mango. Icing sugar. High ABV!

Palate: thick sweet arrival, ABV again makes itself known. Honey, dried pineapple, Alistair's Battenberg Cake and a sprinkling of lemon peel! Yummy!

Finish: short and sweet with a little peppery spice. The honey and tropical fruit notes are there too.
Lovely dram to start with!

Dram 2

Appearance: dark gold in the glass, swirls cling, form large beads and fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: dunnage warehouse, strawberry jam, butterscotch, brown sugar and cinnamon spice - all sherry cask pointers for me!

Palate: thick maple syrup arrival, a little burnt sugar and a spicy ginger bite. Black fruit - dates, cherries, prunes and figs - yummy! A few more sips and the burnt sugar is coming through more - very drying too! I do like this!

Finish : long spicy and dry - a little citrus and loads of strawberry jam. Nice!

Dram 3

Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls form beads and fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: tropical fruit - icing sugar, a little oak. This one again comes across as a high ABV. Dried fruit and mixed fruit jam hint at sherry but I think this is ex-bourbon

Palate: tropical fruit, possible hints of smoke and salinity - are we in Campbeltown here? Icing sugar covered dried pineapple, peppery spice and a note of seaweed - yummy!

Finish - long spicy pepper with tropical fruit sweetness, some cask char or smoke?

Dram 4

Appearance: pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, slowly form beads and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: smoky bacon crisps, bonfire on a beach, seaweed, mature cheddar cheese, some citrus peel - screaming Caol Ila

Palate: dry spicy arrival, seaweed, citrus (sour grapefruit) and a little tropical fruit (pineapple and peach) before a blanket of smoke covers everything.

Finish: long dry smoky finish with pepper, seaweed and tropical fruit

Dram 5

Appearance: Pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as an inverted crown and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: BBQ on the beach again but a little more subdued - grilled pineapple, herbs, salted almonds, maybe honey roast cashew nuts?

Palate: sweet tropical fruit, roast salted almonds and a gentle smoke. This one must be Caol Ila?
