New indie bottler Brave New Spirits @BNS_Whisky chose a @TweetTastings to launch their Cask Noir bottlings.
The drams we received were:
- Dailuaine 11 Year Old - The Rise of the Badger Clan
- Macduff 10 Year Old
- Port Dundas 16 Year Old
- Old Rhosdhu (Loch Lomond) 28 Year Old
Appearance: pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line, bead up and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: stewed apples with nutmeg and cinnamon like from the Apple Pie Shop in #Ambleside. Some penny toffee, honey and a hint of rye spice. Some earthy savoury notes and a hint of lemon peel.
Palate: thin spicy arrival, loads of peppery spice, nutmeg and honey. There's lots of lemon in here - zest, juice, bonbons etc. There's some orchard fruit notes in the background before the liquid disappears leaving dry icing sugar & spice on the tongue. Nice!
Finish: lingering dry spice: nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and a little orchard fruit.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: dark gold / bronze in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up quickly, and fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: dunnage funk, balsamic vinegar drizzled strawberries, dried fruit, toffee. There's some golden syrup sweetness and a hint of cinnamon spice.
Palate: full on PX dates, raisins, figs, prunes. Those balsamic drizzled strawberries are back with some orange peel, coffee toffee and a hint of peppery spice. Only 10 years in that 1st fill PX cask must have been very active. Loads of PX notes and some dry moisture sucking oak notes as the liquid disappears.
Finish: dry wood, a little funk and a little spice. Slightly disappointing.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up quickly and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: pine needles, smoked cheese, walnuts, vanilla and a hint of icing sugar. A little buttered popcorn, some caramel sauce and a hint of peppery spice.
Palate: thick sweet arrival Sauternes maybe? This is white not red wine cask isn't it? Honey, toffee and ginger spice give a sweet and spicy edge. Some salinity, a little drying icing sugar and a sour grapefruit note as the liquid disappears. most of the grain influence has gone - masked by the cask.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: light gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line, bead up immediately and fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: farmyard funk, old damp wood, buttered popcorn, cut grass, digestive biscuit. There's some sour citrus, a little ginger spice and a hint of drying icing sugar.
Palate: light sweet arrival, immediately sour citrus and a little spice hits the tongue. To be honest I've not had any good Old Rhosdhu and this one isn't making a good impression. Cask bound - overly oaky, sour citrus with a bite of ginger & clove spice.
