dekantā @TweetTastings

As part of their 6th anniversary @dekantawhisky recently launched their first World Whisky Blend with the help of @TheWhiskyWire by holding a @TweetTastings

They send out their 4th and 5th anniversary single cask bottlings and the new World Blend, let's see what they are like.

Founded in 2015 by Makiyo Masa dekantā, was the first e-commerce website devoted to selling Japan’s most renowned spirits. They are constantly trying to find new Japanese whisky and whisky for the Japanese market with genuine heritage, quality and rareness to add to their range.

They supplied three whiskies for us to try:

Asaka Aoi Edition

This bottle commemorates the five year anniversary of the company with one of the first single cask single malts to come from the Asaka distillery.

The Aoi Edition is an exclusive release celebrating dekantā’s 5th anniversary. When looking for the perfect name for a release that commemorates such an important milestone in the history of our company, the team was drawn to the Japanese the word “Aoi” which means blue.

Distilled in 2017, this whisky will have matured in a first-fill bourbon cask for 3 years before being bottled in July 2020. It brings an astounding array of notes to the table that allow us to peak behind the curtain of the Asaka distillery and experience first hand the passion, knowledge and expertise of those working there. The nose brings a burst of citrus fruits, freshly sliced apples, gentle oak and hints of pear drops, before making way for vanilla ice cream, salted caramel, creamy toffee, candied lemon peel and gentle pepper spice on the palate. The finish is medium length and tops the whole thing off in style with another vibrant burst of juicy fruits, baked apples and gentle spiced oak.

Eigashima 2011 Kigai - Ki Series

2019 marked an important milestone as the Japanese Whisky industry celebrates its 100th anniversary. In 1919, Eigashima became the first distillery to obtain a license to produce whisky in Japan, thereby starting a chain of events that would eventually lead to the iconic whisky we now cherish.

In addition to the first license being obtained in 1919, the year is also notable in the history of Japanese Whisky as it was the year that Masataka Taketsuru, the “Father of Japanese Whisky”, left on a journey to Scotland to learn the art of whisky making. This voyage would allow him to gain an intricate knowledge of the processes used by Scotch distilleries, which he used upon his return to Japan to spearhead construction of Yamazaki, Yoichi and Miyagikyo.

Kyōyū 共有 – World Blended Whisky

The Kyōyū is dekantā’s inaugural World Blended Whisky, built around the concept of sharing. Japan and Scotland have a long-standing friendship that has lasted through the ages and has seen everything from lacquerware to whisky knowledge shared between them. The Kyōyū is an ode to that partnership that features 26 Year Old whisky from three of Scotland’s best distilleries, expertly blended with young whisky from three of Japan’s rising stars.

My thoughts:

Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls bead up and fall as fast thin legs.

Nose: orchard fruit - apples, pears, apricots; salted caramel, orange peel, some meaty new make notes. Oak, vanilla and a peppery spice.

Palate: sweet watery arrival, the orchard fruit from the nose are back - stewed with a dollop of honey. The meaty note from the nose is back too and some spicy oak. Some maritime notes and a citrus fizz as the liquid disappears.

Finish: long fruit notes with a peppery spice.

My thoughts:

Appearance: dark gold in the glass, swirls leave thin lines which bead up quickly and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose:  the ABV singes the nasal hairs! Citrus, orchard and tropical fruit - lemon zest, apricots, pears, pineapple. Some cereal and oak notes, a little smoke maybe?  Obviously older than the first dram and comes across as more complex.

Palate: sweet spicy arrival, again the ABV dominates. Poached pears and honey, a little gentle smoke, marzipan and a chilli spice. Remind me of an old grain.

Finish: lingering spice, oak and orchard fruit.

My thoughts:

Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as thin legs, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: old oak casks, dunnage funk, gentle smoke, burnt toffee, herbal - rosemary, tangerine, forest floor pine needles, antiseptic plasters.

Palate: sweet syrupy arrival - very warming. Tropical fruit - pineapple, mango, banana. Golden syrup, brown sugar with a little citrus and gentle smoke - Yummy!

Finish: lingering treacle toffee, oak and smoke.
