Lindores Abbey @TweetTastings

For his 201st @TweetTastings, Steve @TheWhiskyWire teamed up with @LindoresAbbey for us to try four of their single casks.

Let's see what the drams were like!

First a little history:

In 1191 on the banks of the Estuary of the River Tay, to the east of Newburgh, David, Earl of Huntingdon, built the ‘Church by the Water’. It was built with local red sandstone, and covered a very large area, the extent of which is still discernible today The position of the Abbey was chosen because of its plentiful supply of timber and stone, and for the swift running waters of the Pow of Lindores running over the land down to the Tay.

Sometime after that the Monks started distilling Aqua Vitae, it must have been good stuff as in 1494 The Friar, a John Cor, was commissioned to turn 8 bolls of malt, enough to make about 400 bottles of today’s whisky, into Aqua Vitae for then then King, James IV.

The current 'owners' of the Abbey are trying to preserve it's remains and bring back distilling with the building of a new distillery. The spirit at Lindores Abbey started flowing in 2017 at what they rightly claim to be "The Spiritual Home of Scotch Whisky".

Drew McKenzie Smith and his team build the distillery, and as I said spirit started flowing at the end of 2017.  So as of 2021 they have legal whisky, they have released a bottle to their Founders Club and these are the first Cask Samples I've seen!

Let's see what everyone thought!

My thoughts:

Appearance
: A mid gold in the glass, swirls cling leaving a hairline crack on the glass, small beads form slowly and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: tropical fruit notes - pineapple, mango, banana, coconut, a little icing sugar, some malt, and cereal notes. Inchmurrin-ish.

Palate: thick mouthcoating arrival, sweet honey. A sweetshop on the tongue: lemon bonbons, pineapple cubes, sherbet lemons, apple chewits ot apple pie. A little water brings out the grape notes and a little oak.

Finish: lingering rye-esk spices, drying icing sugar and tropical fruit hints.
YUMMY!

Other Tweeter's thoughts:

My thoughts:

Appearance: dark gold, almost bronze in the glass, swirls leave a thin line on the glass which forms large beads falling as slow fat legs,

Nose: strawberries, cherries, blackberries, plums.  Cardamom and curry herbs jump out of the glass. There's a big hit of ginger spice here too..

Palate: again thick mouthcoating arrival, huge berry notes from the nose, milk chocolate and an immediate drying effect. Hides it's ABV amazingly well. there's some herb and cereal notes like sample A and a little kick of citrus peel - nice!

Finish: lingering ginger spice and berry fruit notes,
Outstanding dram, would never have said only 3yo or 60+% does not need any water. @LindoresAbbey where can I buy a bottle?

Other Tweeter's thoughts:

My thoughts:

Appearance: another dark gold, almost bronze dram, swirls cling as a hairline crack, bead up slowly and fall as slow thick legs,

Nose: huge strawberry jam notes, milk chocolate, brown sugar, lemon meringue pie, There's a little hint of smoke too - initially I thought this was peated.

Palate: thick mouthcoating arrival (again!) strawberry jam, brown sugar, sweet berries and cherries. There's a big citrus zest note and a little bite of peppery spice leaving the lips tingling.
YUMMY!

Finish: lingering peppery spice and berry fruit notes - yummy!
YUMMY!

Other Tweeter's thoughts:

My thoughts:

Appearance
: pale gold, almost new make, swirls cling as a hairline crack, form tiny beads which fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: bacon frazzles, citrus peel, orchard fruit - apples, pears and dry skinned peaches, icing sugar. A little earthy, soil-y note,

Palate: wow - the ABV hits you on this one, a thick creamy arrival - huge smoke and spice notes, lime peel, stewed apples & pears sprinkled with cinnamon.

Finish: fizzy lemon zest and a little tropical fruit with a blanket of peat smoke. Nice!
