Cù Bòcan @TweetTastings

A new range for this @TweetTastings Tomatin's experimental peated Highland whisky Cù Bòcan.

Cù Bòcan is an experimental Highland Single Malt that explores innovative finishes to create whiskies full of intrigue and surprise.

Made with lightly peated Scottish barley, distilled every winter in limited batches creating a subtly smoky and surprisingly sweet spirit matured in a variety of casks to unlock unusual flavours.

The 3 dram's we were sent were all 46% NAS, unchillfiltered, uncoloured but differed in their maturation:
Signature : c9yo : Bourbon (60%), Oloroso Sherry (25%) + North American Virgin Oak Casks (15%)
Creation #1 : Black Isle Brewery Imperial Stout 12yo (30%) + Bacalhôa Moscatel De Setúbal Wine Casks 9yo (70%)
Creation #2 : Japanese Shochu 13yo (84%) + European Virgin Oak Casks 4yo (16%) (Japanese Shochu, is a spirit (bottled at around 25% ABV) which is usually distilled from rice, barley, wheat, sweet potato, molasses chestnuts)

Lets see what everyone thought of them:

My thoughts:

Appearance: light gold in the glass, swirls leave a thin line on the glass which takes it's time to bead up and fall as slow thin legs. Initial nose: BBQ Pineapple

Nose: Loads of sweet tropical fruit on the BBQ - pineapple, banana etc with that smoke background. Also has hints of seaweed and heather.

Palate: Smooth buttery arrival with a big kick of peppery spice. The tropical fruit from the nose is there along with ginger cake (as mentioned). There's a big citrus fizz on the tongue as the liquid disappears.

Finish: Long spicy tropical fruit notes, huge citrus and spice notes but the smoke has gone missing.

My thoughts:

Appearance: Darkest of the three tonight a mid gold colour in the glass, swirls leave a thick line in the glass immediately starting to fall as slow thick legs. Initial nose: Toasted teacakes

Nose: Steak on the BBQ, toasted fruits and a bite of citrus. There's a little of the tropical fruit from the Signature but it's not as pronounced. A little time in glass offers smoky stout notes - YUMMY!

Palate: Thick syrupy arrival - lots of sweetness balanced by the smoke and a bite of spice. Sweet tropical fruit smothered in honey. There's some strawberry toffo notes in here too. Nice! As the liquid disappear the spice takes over - yummy! There's a citrus fizz on the tongue again like with the Signature.

Finish: Again long and spice - the smoke is back along with a dark chocolate dryness. Did someone mention cherries?

My thoughts:

Appearance: A pale gold in the glass, swirls cling but immediately fall as slow thing legs. Initial nose: smoky toffee apples.

Nose: Smoke, orchard fruit and an icing sugar dryness on this one. Seems a little more 'whisky-like' than the first two 'experiments'. Barley sugars and honey come to the fore.

Palate: Another syrupy arrival - but the sweetness is balanced with orchard fruit and a peppery spice. Hardly any smoke notes on this one. Hints of porridge and ginger snaps. Again that citrus fizz on the tongue - a
@cubocanwhisky trait! As the liquid disappears it leaves that citrus fizz but also a sweet Icing Sugar dryness- Yummy.
Stuck between Creation #1 and #2 now.....

Finish:  Orchard fruit and honey with a lingering gentle bite of spice and hint of smoke. Yummy!
