When you visit a distillery visitor's centre you would normally expect to pick up a Distillery Exclusive - something special to remember your trip.
Glasgow Distillery don't have a Visitor's Centre but they have recently started tours and a Distillery Exclusive bottling.
When the Driven By Drams team visited in Aug '24 tours hadn't yet started, we were like Guinea Pigs but had a really enjoyable time touring the facilities, trying drams drawn from casks in the warehouse and enjoying a few drams in the conference room! At that time they didn't have a Distillery Exclusive either.
The Distillery Exclusive was a 2017 7yo Single Cask peated Oloroso bottling.
Let's see what it's like....
Appearance: Bronze in the Glencairn, swirls cling as a hairline crack in the glass, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: thick dried fruit, plum and date notes, there's some figs, prunes and a little black treacle. This is all rounded off with a gentle hint of peat smoke. A little time and air offers some tropical fruit hints and dry icing sugar.
Palate: thick sweet arrival: dates, figs, prunes - yummy! The smoke is very gentle, not as overpowering as the CS Peated bottling. Juicy orchard and tropical fruit provide a background with treacle, balsamic vinegar drizzled strawberries, dark chocolate and a lovely marzipan note coming to the fore.
Finish: lingering berries, toffee, gentle spice and a little smoke.
Overall: This is the first oloroso matured dram I've had from Glasgow, it doesn't disappoint.
