These are my tasting notes and results from the Blind Tasting Consortium's 50th #BlindDrams evening.
Our theme was 50 Shades of Gold
This was our 50th #BlindDrams, we started in June '2020
So far we've had 16 different people/pairs choosing the drams and 135 people take part in one of our tastings! Only John and I will have taken part in all 50 so we chose the bottles for this milestone tasting!
Including tonight we'll have sampled 248 different drams (+2 duplicates!) from 110 different distilleries from 14 different countries in our 5 years of #BlindDrams
Here are my tasting notes from #BTC50:
Dram 1
Appearance: very pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: lemon bonbons, lemon cheesecake, fresh lemon zest and a little tropical fruit. Dry and dusty icing sugar with some digestive biscuit notes.
Palate: thin sweet arrival, mouth coating. Lots of lemon zing and tropical fruit notes. There’s a lovely peppery spice note as the liquid disappears.
Finish: short and sweet with lemon pepper spice.
I quite like this, good solid opener - I'll give it a 3
Dram 2
Appearance: very pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, take an age to bead up and fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: quite closed: oak, barley and faint smoke. A faint strange vegetal note: rotten fruit, compost and wet cardboard. There’s some stewed orchard fruit and a little vanilla.
Palate: sweet arrival: honey, orchard fruit, citrus and vanilla. There’s still a strange vegetal note but it’s a little more subdued. There’s a little peppery spice and some nutty milk chocolate and mint as the liquid disappears
Finish: short and sweet with orchard fruit, mint and a little dry spice.
It's OK but just not my cup of tea, scores a 1.
Dram 3
Appearance: dark gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, take an age to bead up and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: oak, vanilla, buttered popcorn. Coconut and roasted hazelnuts, a little smoke maybe? with some rum & raisin ice cream. There’s some orchard fruit and wax polish hints
Palate: thick sweet arrival: all the buttered popcorn and wood notes from the nose alongside apricot, honey and pineapple. There’s some dry dusty oak and a bite of peppery spice as the liquid disappears.
Finish: lingering dry wood spice, smoke hints, dried pineapple and vanilla.
Really liking this, scores a 4
Dram 4
Appearance: light gold in the glass, swirls cling as a hairline crack in the glass and form small beads which fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: orchard fruit basket: pears, apples, apricots, peaches and plums. There’s a little honey sweetness and dry icing sugar. A little time in the glass brings the plums to the fore. A little tropical fruit and peppery spice.
Palate: thick arrival, a lovely balance of honey sweetness and peppery spice. Orchard fruit from the nose is here along with a tropical twist of pineapple, kiwi and banana. A little sour grapefruit and peppery spice as the liquid disappears.
Finish: lingering fruit and spice with a little honey and dry nut.
Nice enough - scores a 3 from me!
Dram 5
Appearance: light gold in the glass, swirls cling as a hairline crack in the glass and form small beads which fall as slow thin legs.
Nose: huge dirty smoke notes: rubber, engine oil and strawberry jam on burnt toast. There’s a little damp straw, walnut and some prunes.
Palate: thick smoky arrival: some tart berry sweetness, dry rubber, a little salinity and some liquorice. Smoked kippers and berry compote round things off.
Finish: long and dry with berries, smoke and liquorice allsorts.
Yummy dram to finish - scores a 4 from me!
