@Bowmore Distillery shared some of their recent bottlings with us in a @TweetTastings.
Appearance: dark gold / bronze in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, beads up slowly and eventually fall as slow thick oily legs.
Nose: gentle smoke and salinity to start, red berries, balsamic vinegar and some dried fruit. Some tropical fruit, citrus peel and gentle spice. Some dunnage funk coming through - tropical fruit in syrup and a lovely orange and lemon marmalade hint.
Palate: a little thin on arrival, immediately sweet: brown sugar, honey and toffee. Then it goes slightly sour with the citrus. Tropical fruit, citrus and red berries dance on the tongue before everything is covered in a gentle maritime smoke note.
Finish: short dry smoke, salinity and a gentle peppery spice.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: dark gold / bronze in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: loads of dunnage funk, strawberries drizzled in balsamic vinegar, dried fruit, figs, dates and prunes. There's a lovely smoke note, a little stronger than the standard 18yo, but no salinity on the nose here.
Palate: again a little thin but full of smoke and sherry notes, The strawberries and balsamic from the nose are back, some honey, dried pineapple and icing sugar diving a sweet dryness. There's a lovely smoked sour grapefruit note as the liquid disappears!
Finish: lingering dry smoke, red berries and dried pineapple.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: dark gold / bronze in the glass, swirls clings as a think line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thick oily legs.
Nose: a little less dunnage funk on this one, more musty old book shop. Loads more tropical fruit in syrup on this one, a little salinity and a nice waft of smoke. Sherry soaked dried fruit, prunes & figs give a lovely fruit sweetness. A little dry shortbread.
Palate: lovely thick mouthcoating arrival fig pudding, marzipan covered fruit cake, cream sherry. Sweet tropical fruit. A blanket of thick smoke covers everything - the smokiest Bowmore I think I've ever tried. Immediately drying, leaving you wanting for more.
Finish: long dry and smoky - a little tropical fruit and a gentle spice.
Other Tweeter's thoughts:
Appearance: dark gold / bronze in the glass, swirls clings as a thin line in the glass, take an age to bead up, forming an inverted crown. The beads eventually fall as slow thin oily legs.
Nose: parma violet perfume to start, a little dry red wine, and some sweet honey. There's some raspberry coulis, grilled banana and a little lemon zest. Gentle smoke, salinity and ginger spice.
Palate: thick sweet arrival: black treacle and honey. The floral param violet notes are back alongside an almond marzipan - immediately drying. Lots of tropical fruit, berry and citrus notes here too. The smoke and salinity isn't as prominent as the 22yo.
Finish: long dry and smoky - a little tropical fruit and a gentle spice.
