Glen Scotia Campbeltown Malts Festival 2022 Single Casks

The Campbeltown Malts Festival was back in full swing for 2022 and Glen Scotia released their 8yo Peated PX Cask finished Festival Limited Edition. (Review here)

They also released their Festival Edition and Festival Dinner Single Casks.

If you'd visited the Festival on Glen Scotia Distillery Day you may have been lucky enough to pick up one of 221 bottles of the Festival Edition 007 release from the distillery shop. If you'd been extra lucky and managed to get a ticket for the Glen Scotia Festival Dinner with Charles Mclean you'd have been given one of 221 bottles of the Festival Dinner bottlings.

I was lucky enough to be get samples of the two single cask releases - here's my thoughts:

2022 Festival Dinner Bottling

Distillery notes

Fresh cut oak, a little spice, delicate creaminess, hints of pear drop, a little light oil - salt well yes! Buttery vanilla fudge and vibrant fruits alongside a touch of citrus and tangy oak char... Encapsulates the distillery journey to a T. Enjoy!

My thoughts:

Info
: 9yo, 58.1% ABV, Natural colour, NCF, 288 bottles.

Cask #47, D: '13, First fill bourbon barrel, B: '22.

Appearance: Mid gold in the glass, swirls leave a thin line which slowly beads up to leave an inverted crown which eventually fall as slow thin oily legs.

Nose: Lightly charred oak, milk chocolate, salinity, a little closed. A little time and air offers characteristic tropical fruit notes of banana bread, pineapple, mango and kiwi. Citrus zest but no real sweetness.

Palate: Thick oily arrival, salinity, sweetness and spice: drying seaweed,  honey, toffee and ginger spice. Tropical fruit basket on the tongue - pineapple, banana, kiwi, peach and mango - some dryness. A little time and air offers citrus zest, charred oak and more ginger spice. YUMMY!

Finish: Lingering ginger spice, salinity and tropical fruit.

Overall:  This is another 'plain' ex-bourbon Glen Scotia single cask. The typical oily salinity, tropical fruit, ginger spice and hint of citrus proudly showing the distillery's DNA.

My 2,000th different dram!

Festival Edition 007

Distillery notes

Initial rich robust oily peat influence, subtle clementine citrus, salinity, a little dry dirty appeal. Huge regionality, distant refill tropical notes, sweetness - butter scotch, toffee brittle,  caramel popcorn. Complexity that keeps evolving!

My thoughts:

Info
: 18yo, 50.9% ABV, Natural colour, NCF, 221 bottles.

Cask #19/57-73, D: '04, Refill Bourbon then recasked into Refill Oloroso Hogshead '19, B: '22.

Appearance:  Dark gold, bronze even, in the glass, swirls cling and form small beads which fall as slow thin oily legs.

Nose: Thick peat smoke, engine oil, drying seaweed and blueberry jam. A few swirls in the glass and you are tempted by tropical fruit, citrus and berries.

Palate: Very smooth oily arrival, salty and sweet at the same time with a blanket of peat smoke.
Blueberry jam, dates, plums, black cherries. as well as a basket of tropical fruit: pineapple, mango and kiwi. There's some almond notes and a little balsamic vinegar. Drying as the liquid disappears - leaves an spicy ashy note on the tongue. This reminds me a lot of the 5th Festival Edition from 2020. Very warming as the liquid disappears.

Finish: Lingering ginger spice, salinity and peat smoke with berries and almonds.

Overall:  A very different dram from the Dinner Bottling, it's obviously a lot older but the heavily peated new make and 3 years in a refill Oloroso cask has had a huge impact on the dram. Peat smoke, engine oil and berries come to the fore but the Glen Scotia DNA of oily salinity, tropical fruit and a little citrus are here too. Yummy!
