J.G. Thompson @TweetTastings

@JG_Thomson recently held a @TweetTastings with @TheWhiskyWire to launch their new range!

I was lucky enough to be picked - here's my thoughts and those of a few friends!

J.G. Thompson sent us each 5 drams from the current range:

The first two were Gin and Rum which most people enjoyed, I'm not a fan, so let's get on the whisky:

My thoughts:

Appearance
: mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, take an age to bead up and fall as slow thin legs. Initial nose: pineapple upside down cake.

Nose: tropical fruit to start with - pineapple, banana, peach and melon. then it's turns a bit orchardy with pears and apricots, A little honey, vanilla and a hint of smoke? A little time and air offers some citrus, coconut and black cherry.

Palate: smooth sweet arrival, mouthcoating orchard fruit, tropical fruit & a bite of ginger spice. apples, pears, pineapple, mango they're all in here. Honey, icing sugar and lemon play their part in leaving a lovely sweet zingy palate as the liquid disappears. Also getting a little salted lemon on this - some coastal influence maybe?

Finish: lingering citrus zest, a little salt and dried pineapple covered in icing sugar. Really rather nice!

With a Mince Pie: the sweetness of the whisky compliments the dried fruit and icing sugar - yummy!

My thoughts:

Appearance
: dark gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thick lines. Initial nose: sherry soaked dried fruit.

Nose: typical sherry notes - strawberry jam, dried fruit, a little dusty bookshop, nutty milk chocolate and a little orange juice.

Palate: a little thin out of the glass, Christmas cake sherry notes from the nose continue and a little cinnamon spice. It seems to get thicker on the tongue and ends up coating the mouth with a spiced orange note. Some dry oak tannins as the liquid disappears.

With a Mince Pie: Oh yes! That is fantastic...Just shows what these Pies could be if they were from
@Fortnums - the dried fruit is now soaked in alcohol.

My thoughts:

Appearance
: pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as thick line, slowly bead up and fall as slow thick legs. Initial nose: bonfire on the beach!

Nose: huge smoke and salt notes pointing at Caol Ila but there's some medicinal funk in here too meaning were heading a little further South. Almonds, shortbread, lemon zest, baked apples and hints of dried fruit.

Palate: surprisingly sweet arrival, mouth coating dried fruit, honey and salted caramel. The smoke is there in the background, taking over as the liquid disappears. Dry icing sugar sweetness left on the tongue.

With a Mince Pie: very strange sensation, these two don't combine at all, the Mince Pie is there, the whisky is there but not together. The citrus helps a little but the smoke just isn't right at all.
