Virtual tasting: Wolfburn with Inverurie Whisky Shop

The -Pack gang are back! After a A.D. Rattray #RatPack tasting, we talked to the  Inverurie Whisky Shop about a 2nd Zoom Whisky tasting and they came up with a Wolfburn Small batch tasting - so the newly renamed #WolfPack were back in action!

The Inverurie Whisky Shop is a small shop in the town of Inverurie - great if you live near Aberdeen, but not too much use to those of us living in England or elsewhere. But they do a great line in both public and private tutored tastings.

Mike @whiskyrover again organised the zoom tasting.

The #WolfPack each paid £30 for 5 x 30ml samples delivered and on the night a Zoom session was organised. Mike Stuart from the shop led us through a great tasting, sharing insights into Wolfburn.

My brief thoughts on the drams:

No. 128, 3yo 46% Ex-bourbon (released in 2017)
Nose: cereal, nutes, citrus, vanilla
Palate: smooth buttery arrival, honey, lemon citrus, a little toffee and some spicy ginger
Finish: long lingering citrus and oak spice

No. 270, 3yo 46% Ex-bourbon (released in 2018)
Nose: vanilla, coconut, milk chocolate - Bounty Bar? some orchard fruit
Palate: creamy arrival, milk chocolate, custard, drying, spicy fizz as liquid disappears, brown sugar
Finish: creamy vanilla, lingering sweetness

No. 375, 3yo 46% Ex-bourbon & 2nd Fill Oloroso Hogsheads (released in 2019)
Nose: cereal, vanilla, orchard fruit and a little honey
Palate: creamy spicy arrival, drying citrus fizz on the tongue, sweeter than the previous two, very little sherry influence
Finish: creamy vanilla, lingering citrus spice, maybe a hint of strawberry?

No. 155, 3yo 46% Ex-bourbon for 4 years and a 6mth finish in a Port Hogshead (released in 2020)
Nose: brown sugar, red berries, meringue  Eton mess?
Palate: thick creamy arrival, ginger spice, red berries, pear skin very drying
Finish: dry sweet berry notes, a little orchard fruit

Help For Heroes 2020, 3yo 46% Ex-bourbon  & Oloroso (released in 2020)
Nose: ABV seems stronger on this one, honey, vanilla, hints of strawberry jam, nutmeg and cinnamon
Palate: milk chocolate, sweet honey, orchard fruit, vanilla, hint of charred cask?
Finish: long gentle vanilla spice note

A nice set of drams, the 155 stuck out for me as the best on the night but the others weren't far behind young drams but you couldn't tell. As usual these tatsings are a great way to get a feel for a dram before deciding to buy a full bottle.

Many thanks to Mike at @InverurieWhisky for supplying and running the tasting and my fellow #WolfPack for a great evening! @whiskyrover , @ReviewsWhisky, @JasonGilluley, @TheWhiskyNovice, Tim and Roy.

Inverurie Whisky Shop organise their own tastings or you can ask, like we did, for a private one - more details here!
