Whyte & Mackay @TweetTastings #WhyteChristmas

Recently Whyte & Mackay celebrated their 175th Anniversary and released a 50yo Blend... but with a difference! It wasn't available to buy anywhere, if you bought a bottle of the normal blend you could enter a draw to win a bottle of the 50yo - a brilliant idea. Or if you were really lucky and got selected for the #WhyteChristmas @TweetTastings you received a 50ml sample!

I was lucky and received the set but struggled to wait until the night of the tasting!

Some others were equally excited!

First up on the night was W&M's new Light at 21.5%

My thoughts:

Appearance: Mid gold in the glass, coloured maybe? Swirls fall as thin fast legs.

Nose: Lovely smoke, some orchard fruit, honey and toffee. Some christmas spices?

Palate: Thin in the mouth, the ABV does show through here, but there is still that lovely smoke note. There's not a lot of fruit here though - a little butter and some spice.

Finish: Very little in the way of finish - a little smoke and spice. Might be an intro whisky for a new drinker but they will get a shock when they try something stronger.

Next up was Fettercairn's 12yo PX, I've tried this one before and it's lovely!

My thoughts:

Appearance:
Yellow gold in the glass, swirls cling to the glass before falling as  slow thin legs.

Nose: There's honey and pineapple; sweet strawberry jam and an icing sugar dryness. A little time in the glass reveals apricots, mango and dates a tropical fruit salad!

Palate: A slightly oily arrival, again sweet but not overly so. All the tropical notes from the nose flow on to the palate: pineapple, mango and apricot are there, the dates seem to have stayed in the glass. Strawberry jam and icing sugar (@CEVokins) are there, the latter giving an instant dryness. There is a lovely spicy ginger bite at the end. Yummy!

Finish: Medium length, warming and spicy. There is a little sweetness but the ginger takes centre stage here. Yummy!

Third of the evening was Jura's Two-One-Two

My thoughts:

Appearance: Another yellowy gold dram. Swirls cling forever....

Nose: Milk chocolate and tinned peaches with a big underlying note of damp grass. There's some nuts and a little dried pineapple.

Palate: Thick slightly oily, loads of ginger spice. Hints of vanilla and tropical fruit.

Finish: Long spicy ginger with some oak and tropical fruit notes - nice!

Fourth of the evening was a 2000 Tamnavulin release:

My thoughts:

Appearance: Pale gold in the glass, gravity defying swirls eventually fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: Dunnage warehouse, must book shop notes, fried fruit, strawberry jam - Yummy!
A few swirls and a little time in the glass add icing sugar and banana bread notes.

Palate: Mmmmm spicy strawberry jam - is that such as thing? Gives way to tropical fruit notes, a little dark  fruit and nut chocolate and a icing sugar dryness - this is yummy!

Finish: The spice dominates here, a little pepper and ginger, there is a huge drying note and a little honey. Yummy dram!

Final dram of the evening was the Whyte & Mackay 50yo blend

My thoughts:

Appearance: Brown in the glass, gravity defying swirls eventually fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: WOW - I've just woken up in the middle of a dunnage warehouse, musty, dusty and a great place to be! It's full on dark fruit - raisins, sultanas, dates, prunes, figs. Some nuts and dark bitter chocolate too. Yummy! There's a really interesting sweet note on the nose - anyone put their finger on it?

Palate: Black cherries, dates and prunes, loads of drying oak - all the moisture has gone from my mouth with the first sip! A little dark chocolate and spent match smoke. There's a little blackberry and pear in here too - wonderfully complex - dram history!

Finish: A surprising sweet note, very drying and little smoked pear to finish. YUMMY!

Other tweeter's thoughts:

A great evening of draming, many thanks to Steve, Whyte & Mackay and my fellow tweeters!
