BTC7 #BlindDrams Tasting Notes

These are my tasting notes from the Blind Tasting Consortium's 7th #BlindDrams evening.

These drams were picked by Gordon @gordonsmith63 and Scott @ScotchB78

Dram 1

Appearance: mid gold in colour, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: orchard fruit to start, some pine needles and barley sugars. Grassy herbal notes and a good prickle from perhaps a high ABV?

Palate: Thick sweet syrupy arrival, orchard fruit turning a little tropical - pineapple, mango, banana and a big bite of ginger spice, continues with a icing sugar sweetness then a sour citrus grapefruit fizz left on the tongue as the liquid disappear. Nice!

Finish: sour citrus and lingering tropical fruit.
Nice this one - good start! I'd have a bottle - thinking a 50% ABV Speysider?

Dram 2

Appearance: another mid gold whisk, swirls cling as a thin line, beat up slowly and fall as slow thick legs.

Nose: high ABV is apparent again, empty smoky bacon crisps bag, cola cubes and dried pineapple.

Palate: thick syrupy arrival, maybe not as sweet as dram1, a little more spice too. The ABV is up there as well. Liquorice, orchard fruit, brown sugar, dark chocolate and again a sour citrus note....another Arran?

Finish: long lingering orchard fruit, huge ginger spice and a little sour citrus. Maybe a hint of strawberry jam - refill sherry cask? Not one I'd buy - sorry....

Dram 3

Appearance: dark gold in the glass, swirls cling as a hairline crack, take a while to bead up and eventually fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: toffee, strawberry jam, strawberry toffos? Musty 2nd hand bookshop, some dried fruit and a cheap sherry.

Palate: thick chewy arrival - huge ABV, sour citrus, figs, black cherries, dates and some toffee. Smoke hints are offered too. A little water adds a burnt coffee note and some drying ginger spice. The ABV on this one must be north of 60%

Finish: lingering chilli spice, a little smoke and burnt coffee. Not one I'd buy - not really in to Sherry Bombs

Dram 4

Appearance: Bronze colour hinting at sherry bomb, swirls cling as a hairline crack, eventually forming beads and falling as slow thick legs.

Nose: surprisingly not as much of a
sherry bomb as Dram3, dunnage notes are here and strawberry jam but there is more sweetness - brown sugar and a nutty note. Dark fruit - dates, black cherries, figs all stored in a thick oak box.

Palate: an more elegant sherry bomb, older? Huge dried fruit and black fruit - blackberries, figs, dates, black cherries, very drying. Hints of dark chocolate and a little smoke. This seems a little older and more refined than Dram4. Orange zest is a good shout but I'm getting a sour note as the liquid disappears - grapefruit?

Finish - long spicy ginger notes with berry fruit and smoke notes. Nice - much better than 3

Dram 5

Appearance: mid gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up slowly and fall as slow thin legs.

Nose: Maritime medicinal peat smoke - we're on Islay but.... the colour is a little dark - a sherry or wine cask maybe but I'm not getting any of that on the nose - it's all just smoke - Germoline and plasters!

Palate: ooooooh that's good - that's the winner! smooth sweet and sour arrival, a little honey, a little grapefruit. BBQ pineapple with a syrup drizzle, Baked apple cored with dried fruit and honey. YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY!

Finish: sweet tropical fruit and smoke. Y U M M Y
