Flash Blog: The Singleton's Malt Master’s Selection

A message on Twitter asking if I'd like to take part in a Flash Mob? What's not to like - let's all meet up somewhere at a prearranged time and do something stupid in front of lots of people!

Then I read it a bit closer - it was from Steve Rush...

Now I know Steve enjoys his whisky but I never took him for a dancer...

I read a little closer...

A whisky flash blog - ah - all was becoming clear!
"We’d love for you to write a review of the new Singleton Malt Masters Selection, then after 9am on June 14th post your review on your blog, linking via social media."
So then on to the whisky!

Diageo has revamped the entire core range of The Singleton, this is the new NAS 40% Malt Master’s Selection from their 123 year old Dufftown distillery.

It was matured in a combination of refill, Sherry and Bourbon casks to produce a sweeter style of whisky to replace the Dufftown 12yo.

Now I had a bottle of the 12yo last year and it was OK - a nice easy drinking uncomplicated dram, it even found it's way into Series 1 of our #BlindTasting with some complimentary comments from the group.

Diageo's tasting notes for the Malt Master’s Selection are:

Nose: Fresh fruit, hints of honey and vanilla.

Taste: Light to medium bodied. Delicate and smooth with fresh fruit, sweet spice and fresh pear.

Finish: Medium with warmth, lingering vanilla and sprinkle of white pepper.

So in the absence of hundred of other dancers(!) but lots of other bloggers and tweeters let see what this new entry level dram has to offer!

My thoughts:

Appearance: A nice yellow gold colour - but I think it's artificial? Slow fat legs when swirled, initial nose honey & acetone.

Nose: Sweet honey, some pear and a hint of digestive biscuit.

Palate: Unexpectedly thick on the palate, tongue coating but smooth! Honey and pears from the nose dominate but there's also a little malty dryness.

Finish: Lovely mild ginger spice on the finish with some sweetness.

Overall: A nice starter dram or something for when you want a smooth spicy drink without having to really think about it!

Many thanks to @TweetTastings for organising my first flash mob, @SingletonWhisky for the dram and my fellow mobsters for an enjoyable flash!
