Clonakilty @TweetTastings

@TheWhiskyWire continues his 2021 @TweetTastings teaming up with Irish distillery @clondistillery where we got to try some of their whiskies.

Here's some thoughts from me and some of my friends who took part!

The Clonakilty distillery was built in 2018 by the Scully family who have farmed the windswept coastal land on the southwest coast of Ireland for 9 successive generations.

With the first triple distilled spirit flowing from their pot stills in 2019, this means of course that all the whisky we are trying here is sourced.

We were each sent a set of 3 samples:

Let's see what everyone thought!

My thoughts:

Appearance: obviously clear in the glass, swirls leave a thin line which beads up quickly falling as slow thick legs.
Nose: fresh floral and citrus notes to start, pine needles, lemon zest, vanilla and a hint of peppery spice. There's some lemonade notes here along with tea tree oil?
Palate: the lemon and pine notes from the nose come through on the palate, icing sugar sweetness and dryness, lemon meringue pie (thanks @TheWhiskyWire) and a hint of nutty Toblerone.
Finish: short sweet and dry with a pine needle note. Not usually a lover of gin, but the extra ABV really helped this one - nice!

My thoughts:

Appearance: gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thin line, bead up and fall as slow thin legs. Initial nose: grape skins
Nose: grapes, vanilla, banana, orchard fruit - apricots, apples, peaches. There's a little hint of strawberry jam in here too.
Palate: lovely thick creamy arrival, loads of orchard fruit and berries - pears, apples, peaches, strawberries, blackberries. There's a lot of milk chocolate in here and a lovely peppery spice as the liquid disappears. YUMMY!
Finish: lingering peppery spice, a little sweet honey and some strawberry jam. Really liked this!

My thoughts:

Appearance: pale gold in the glass, swirls cling as a thick line, bead up and fall as slow thick legs. Initial nose: mixed fruit jam
Nose: Mixed fruit jam - apples, peaches, strawberries, blackberries with a hint of lemon zest. There's a little banana and some vanilla ice cream notes too.
Palate: sweet tropical fruit and berries followed by a peppery spice: dried pineapple, mango, banana, coconut, strawberries and a lovely a gingery spice. There's a liquorice or cola cube note too - nice!
Finish: medium length tropical fruit and spice : bounty coconut, dried pineapple offering some dryness and ginger giving a spice kick - lovely!
